Carnegie Mellon University’s Doherty Hall is a highly advanced chemical engineering laboratory facility. The five floors, three above and two below, house the department’s facilities for computational modeling, optical
microscopy, bacterial and cell culture, aerosol science and surface science. Dick Building Company was the general contractor for two of the most frequently used lecture hall classrooms in Doherty Hall. Due to the location, size, amenities, and equipment, they are a central hub for teaching and learning on the CMU Campus. The project renovation totaled approximately 6,000sqft. of space. Included in the scope was new LED lighting and controls, furniture upgrades with power seats and extensive electrical upgrades. New carpeting, paint and handrails provide a refreshed look for both classrooms. While the scope of the project was within a typical range for refurbishing and upgrading existing classrooms, long lead items for crucial components necessitated ongoing communication with subcontractors and a continuous, collaborative effort throughout the project. Maintaining dedicated meetings and fostering transparent communication among all stakeholders proved essential in addressing potential challenges. The result was a safe, timely and cost effective project completion.
